NLTK (Natural Language Toolkit) is a specialized tool for natural language processing. The NLTK package comprises of modules with most widely used NLP algorithms but also of tools for using data from many corpora.

Installing NLTK

Use the following command: pip install nltk

Import nltk module in the console: import nltk

Download NLTK resources . You will receive the following window:
ecran download date pentru nltk

The window contains multiple tabs:

  • Collections - (a compact view)
  • Corpora - a detailed view of the corpora packages
  • Models (data)
  • All packages.

NLTK example texts

In the exercises we will use the texts from book module (and some other tools). To import them, we write: >>> from import *
*** Introductory Examples for the NLTK Book ***
Loading text1, ..., text9 and sent1, ..., sent9
Type the name of the text or sentence to view it.
Type: 'texts()' or 'sents()' to list the materials.
